Development Squad

Introduction for young swimmers to competitive swim training techniques. The Development Squad is to provide preliminary physical preparation and fundamental stroke technique. Swimmers may also be introduced to inter-club and district competitions.

District Squad

The objective is to provide increased training and competitive swimming for athletes who have demonstrated their swimming ability as well as the desire to become more involved in competitive swimming. The quantity and the intensity of the training increases and swimmers spend more time devoted to physiological conditioning rather than swimming fundamentals.

Intermediate Squad

The quantity and the intensity of the training increases and swimmers spend more time devoted to physiological/psychological skills conditioning. Weekly mileage begins to be an important consideration and although low intensity aerobic training is still the first priority, athletes begin to do more anaerobic threshold work. As swimmers swim faster in training, maintaining good technique is emphasised.

State Squad

The quantity and the intensity of the training increases and for the first time swimmers begin to specialise in chosen events whilst further developing their physiological/psychological conditioning and technical skills. Athletes at this level are competing at district and state level competitions.

National Squad

The objective is to provide elite training to swimmers with the appropriate attitude, experience and talent to move to this level of training. Athletes at this level are training to compete at national level competitions.
The training at national level becomes very demanding with a heavy emphasis on distance based physiological/psychological skills training. Specialisation of training for stroke and distance becomes the main priority.
